Map my future
SWBAT: use line as a key element and principle of art to create a map of a meaningful place using adobe photoshop.
Everyone has a special place that reminds them of a memory, excites a future plan, or has some meaning to their past. When we think of these places. we can often "picture" what they look like. What we don't think of is what they'd look like from above as seen on a map or a topographical map. For this project, we are going to create a map based on a location we love, focusing on lines.
your project:
Start by going onto Google Maps and looking for an area you hold special in some way. This could be a vacation spot, a future school you're attending, or even right here in your own hometown.
Once you have the area you'd like, you will screenshot using COMMAND SHIFT 4 on your keyboard. Draw the box around the area you will turn into your map for inspiration. INSPIRATION PHOTO EXAMPLE BELOW.

Next, create a new layer and begin to draw the major cross sections of streets in a 5-7 pt thickness line. The thickness of the line is up to your own personal preference, typically done in BLACK.
Next, create a new layer and begin to draw the side streets and cross sections of side streets in a 2-4 pt thickness line, also typically done in BLACK.
Next. create other SHAPES to designate specific places or things. For example a long wiggly blue line could be a river. A criss cross purple line could be a train track or a green rectangle could be a park. This is sort of like your map "legend" which would help a viewer designate what is around your lines.
Lastly, if there a specific part of the map you'd like to showcase such as a house, meeting point, or "spot" you can add a heart, star, pin, or any other symbol that designates that special area.
Once all your LINES are complete, you will then turn off visibility on your original inspiration photograph. This will leave you with a white background and just your lines and shapes.
Extension: If you like a portion of the map still showing, you can lower the opacity instead of turning off visibility. Additionally, if you'd like to put another image in the background-maybe a photograph from the exact location you chose, you can add that and change the opacity as well. Customize this any way you'd like.
